CV Tips to Boost Your Job Search

Employers often spend less than 30 seconds reviewing a CV, so making a strong first impression is essential. Whether you’re actively job hunting or just keeping an eye out, here are some proven tips to help your CV stand out.

Tailor It for Each Role

Always tailor your CV to the job you’re applying for. Use the job description to guide what skills and experiences to highlight, and reflect the language they use to increase your chances of passing initial screening.

Start with a Clear Personal Profile

Begin with a short personal statement 3 to 4 lines summarising who you are, your key strengths, and what kind of role you’re seeking.

Highlight Achievements, Not Just Responsibilities

Employers want to see the impact you’ve made. Wherever possible, focus on results: “Improved reporting accuracy by 20%”, or “Successfully implemented a new accounting system across 3 departments.”

Keep It Concise

Stick to a clean format with bullet points, consistent headings, and no more than two pages. Use a professional font and avoid unnecessary photos, graphics or colours.

Professionalism Matters

Give your CV a good file name and ensure your email address is professional.

Don’t Leave Gaps Unexplained

If you’ve taken a break, had a career change, or been between roles, include a brief explanation. Career gaps are common, it’s how you handle them that matters.

Proofread. Then Proofread Again

Spelling and grammar errors can undermine even the strongest CV. Double check everything, and ask someone you trust to review it. A small typo can make a big difference.
